Warrior Dash Princess-Mixed Media Canvas Collage

Hi and Welcome Back!

This 10 x 10 mixed-media canvas collage was created for a very special friend who 'survived' the Warrior Dash last spring (www.warriordash.com.)  The texture and elements used are to remind her of some of the obstacles she successfully tackled in the mud run race.  For example, the braided wire with the red plastic ribbon  represents the barbed wire she had to roll under; wood chips used at the bottom of he canvas help mimic the muddy and rough ground she ran through. I used cargo rope to remind her of the cargo climb and the plastic toy tires relate directly to the road rage exercise where she had to run through real tires and junkyard cars. The metal brads (WP) stand for the nickname I've given her 'Warrior Princess'.  I also put some fuzzy fibers on the warrior helmet you see her wearing. The Warrior Dash medal was the last piece added to the canvas.  (She inadvertently left it at my house and I'm returning it to her as part of a wedding present this spring!)
Below, I've listed the items used in this project.  Hope this inspired you to create more fun projects.  If you have questions or comments about the project - email me at any time.
Happy Crafting!
Melissa

Mixed Media Canvas Project

Happy 2013!

Although the audio is not the best on this video, I thought it was a great project to share with you.   I love how she has incorporated all sorts of items to her canvas in such a balanced way around the picture.  Great self-portrait or as a gift for a friend.

Amazing Creativity

Hi!
Mixed-media scrapbooking has become a growing passion of mine lately.  It moves me to further explore and appreciate the amazing world of creativity.  Part of my exploring process encourages me to meet and learn from artists who are constantly working and honing their craft - whether beading, stamping, scrapbooking, painting, sewing, etc.  Unknowingly, each artist inspires me with a  'take-home' idea to consider integrating into a scrapbook page.   I recently picked up a couple of ideas from a very gifted batic artist, Ms. Wendy B.Tatter,  www.wbtatter.com

Batic art is a process where a mixture of beeswax and paraffin is applied to fabric to resist dyes. Layers of wax and dyes are alternately applied by brush or immersion until the painting is complete.  The wax is removed by placing the fabric between layers of paper and ironing repeatedly.  The wax then melts out into the paper.  Very interesting to say the least!

While in her colorful studio in historic St. Augustine, FL,  I was also attracted to her mixed-media piece titled  "Smiling at My Dog's New Spots".  Wendy shared that the piece was done for a show of several artists chosen to honor the death of artist, Joanne Crisp-Ellert.   Several artists were given a huge canvas and asked to come pick out clothes and objects Joanne had purchased while traveling around the world. These pieces, jewelry, scarves, belts, etc., would be used to create an art piece.  Wendy used a picture that Joanne had painted but changed it by using Joannes' clothing and changed the colors."

Amazing!  I love textures and this piece had lots of it!

Now, I have to step it up and see what kind of beautifully textured page I can come up with.

In the meantime, drop me a line and let me know what has inspired you lately.

Happy Creating!

Scrapbook Page - Snow feel with Glitter

Hi,
So glad you decided to stop by~
I'm working on a page for my Alaska scrapbook album.
I had not been in the snow for over... who knows how many years!!   I've been living in tropical climate for so long, my body thought seventy degrees was cold - I'm not kidding!  So when I went to Alaska you might imagine how 26 degrees below 0 felt - brrrrrr!! Still, I was determined to have lots of fun playing in the snow - and here are the pictures to prove it.

My goal was to create a snow feel effect on the pictures directly.  As you can see in both shots, the snow has a glistening and tangible feel.
The glitter product is manufactured by Advantus/Sulyn www.advantus.com and can be purchased at your local craft store or online. Advantus/Sulyn has a beautiful selection of regular and fine glitter.  The glitter I used for this effect is the 'crystal' glitter.   Once the album is completed I might be inclined to share with my fellow scrappers!
In the meantime, hope you are enjoying a great summer so far.
Happy scrapping!
Melissa

Things to do in Jacksonville, FL

How would you like to travel back in time to the age of the dinosaurs?   This summer you can do so by visiting the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, FL www.themosh.org.
SUE, the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannous Rex is being exhibited daily until September 23, 2012.  The young and the not-so-young are amazed when they come up close to the 63 million year old skeleton of the pre-historic giant.   Not only can you meet SUE, but the different history and science exhibits make for an interesting and fun learning experience.  And on July 14th children are invited to be a part of opposum Tonca's 46th birthday party. Check out the calendar of events at M.O.S.H. (themosh.org/events).

Would you rather develop some of your hidden talents?  Check out some of the beading classes offered by Peggy at The Bead Chick www.thebeadchick.com in historic St. Augustine, or get creative with a stamping class at Claire's collectibles, also located on
San Marco Ave. in San Augustine, www.claires-rubberstamps.com

Whatever you do, make your summer days safe and fun.  And let me know how it goes!

Stay cool!

My Rolling Red Cart - Scrapbook Storage Idea

Hi, I'm glad you came by today.

I was thinking about how much I appreciate the creative genius and organizational skill that many scrapbook lovers possess.  I have seen amazing bedrooms, garages and basements transformed into a scrapbook retreat with every corner of the room used in functional and inspiring ways.  Practical and beautiful pieces of furniture occupy their quarters as do colorful baskets, multi-function storage units and more. Every tool and embellishment they need is at their fingertips.  In these rooms scrapbook lovers bask in their moment of artistic expression with joy, ease and relaxation. If you ever pick up a copy of the magazine Where Women Create - you know what I mean. www.wherewomencreate.com

I, however, don't have one of those rooms (yet). Instead I work on my pages from my dining room table. But, I count my blessings because I do have a small hallway closet that was recently converted to store my scrapbook supplies.  It was designed in such a way that it would also accommodate one of my favorite items - a brick red, rolling kitchen cart I found on sale for about $150.00 at my local Big Lots store.www.biglots.com

The model I bought is made of sturdy wood with a stainless steel top - a nice smooth area to work on and easy to clean. It has one top drawer with room for small items such as pens, embellishments, rulers, adhesives, scissors, ribbons, etc. It also has two wood framed doors that hide a shelf and generous storage space to put away my larger tools along with my work-in-progress. Having wheels on the cart provides freedom of movement so I can roll my project into the living room or screened-in porch whenever I want a change of view or whenever the table has to be set for dinner!

If you are looking for a functional, practical and attractive piece for your creative corner in the world this type of rolling kitchen cart may just be the right thing for you.  And if you do get one, let me know!

Happy Scrapping!
